Sex trafficking has been the subject of big action films and crime dramas, but how well does pop culture actually represent trafficking?

We’ll dive into that question on Human Trafficking Awareness Day, February 22nd, from 6:30-8:30pm. Join us for a film screening of the 2023 blockbuster hit Sound of Freedom and a conversation about representations of sex trafficking in popular culture.

We’ve chosen this film because it’s a controversial film that’s mired in some myths around sex trafficking. It’s also a very popular movie, meaning that many people have seen it and will base their understanding of what trafficking is on how this film (and others like it) represent it.

We hope that watching the film together as a community will help us bust some myths and give people some facts around how trafficking usually happens, as well as talk about how and why movies represent sex trafficking in the ways they do.
