Take Back the Night 2023
September 21 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Join us for our annual Take Back the Night rally and march against sexual violence! Take Back the Night is a global rally and march held to reclaim the streets, raise awareness, and foster solidarity against sexual violence. This year’s theme is “Lead Where You Are,” a quote from Liz Agbor-Tabi that reminds us that no matter where we’re starting from, we can make a difference in the world.
Join us at Marianne’s Park (176 Gordon Street, Guelph) at 6pm on September 21st for drumming and some amazing speakers. This year we’re delighted to welcome:
Mandi Gray is an activist and academic at Trent University. She has been advocating for women and girls involved in the legal system since 2008. Her forthcoming book is titled Suing for Silence: Defamation and Sexual Violence which examines the growing trend of men suing women who accuse them of sexual violence. Mandi is also the primary subject in the documentary film Slut or Nut: The Diary of a Rape Trial (2018).
Nealob Kakar (she/her) is a Queer Afghan community-based researcher, storyteller, poet, artist, and maker of all things. She completed an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Political Science: Public Law and Judicial Studies at McMaster University, and a Master of Public Service at the University of Waterloo. She is currently a Social Practice and Transformational Change PhD student at the University of Guelph with research interests in the ways racialized 2SLGBTQ+ Survivors practice care and mutual aid for one another. Her art, research, and community work centers lived experiences of queerness, being a Muslim woman of colour, survivorship, and intergenerational trauma in the Afghan Canadian context. Nealob has experience creating and facilitating trainings/workshops at the university and community level focused on supporting survivors of sexual and/or gender-based violence through peer support and community level interventions that radically re-imagine transformative futures of collective care.
Following our speakers, we’ll march down to St. George’s Square. The route map is here:
All are welcome! We will have some posters and signs available for the march, or bring your own! The event will be livestreamed for those who can’t make it to the event in person.
