December 6 Vigil
December 6, 2022 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Join us on December 6th at 6:30 p.m. at Marianne’s Park to remember the 14 women killed at L’École Polytechnique Montréal in 1989 and to honour all women who have lost their lives to femicide.
December 6th marks the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. The day is an occasion to mourn the loss of those 14 murdered women, and an opportunity to speak out against the violence that continues to take the lives of women in our communities.
One woman or girl is killed in Canada every 2.5 days, according to a 2020 report by the Canadian Femicide Observatory for Justice and Accountability. Every 6 days, a woman is killed by her male partner. Black, Indigenous, racialized, rural and 2SLGBTQQIA+ women continue to be overrepresented among victims.
The vigil will offer space for reflection, healing and solidarity. This is an in-person event – please dress warmly for the weather. Attendees can wear purple to show support for survivors of gender-based violence.
To protect the community, masks are strongly recommended. For those who cannot attend in person, the event will be livestreamed on the Guelph-Wellington Women in Crisis Facebook page.
